Wyatt Earp
Did Wyatt wear a steel vest when confronting Curly Bill?
Marty wants to know, "In the book Helldorado, Billy Breakenridge talks about Wyatt wearing a steel vest that saved his life in the shoot out with Curly Bill Brocius and the cowboys. Is this pure fiction?"
Breakenridge certainly believed it to be true, just as much as Wyatt knew it to be false. In a letter to his biographer, Stuart Lake, Wyatt wrote, "I never wore a steel vest and never had such a thing in my possession. Another one of his [Breakenridge] damn lies."
Indeed, why would Wyatt Earp wear such a thing while riding in the desert, particularly when he had no idea his posse was going to encounter the cowboys?
